Another painter-mystic: Alfred Jensen (born in Guatemala): Dec. 11, 1903 - 1981…
Above: Honor Pythagoras, Per I - Per VI, 1964 - oil on canvas (Smithsonian)
Jensen had a Danish father, who sent him to school in Denmark after his mother’s unexpected death. After many years as a sailor and a farmer back in Guatemala, Jensen decided to emigrate to the US and settled in California. First, though, he went to Germany and France to study art and see the major capitals. He also found a patron and mentor in art collector Sadie Adler May. After May’s death in 1951, Jensen settled in New York where he befriended Rothko, and devoted himself to developing his own formal language and colour palette, including using checkerboard patterns and calligraphy in his art…
Eventually he became more and more interested in numerology and metaphysics:
The idea of correspondence has great significance and replaces the idea of causality, for things are connected rather than caused. Thus lovely things summon others among the class of lovely things, repulsive things summon others among the class of repulsive things. This arises from the complementary way in which a thing of the same class responds. This idea that things belonging to the same class resonate or energize each other has guided me in producing my 1973 paintings.
